  • Complex Neural Signals Decoding Lab (CNSD Lab) is a lab that focuses on research on collecting and analysing the dynamic neural signals associated with various cognitive activities with an aim to understand how the neural signals tell us about how mental systems work. The lab director is Dr Guang Ouyang, Associate Professor from Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. CNSD lab primarily focuses on analysing non-invasively collected EEG (Electroencephalography) data, but the methodologies extend to other neural signals modalities and behavioural data.

    The research topics comprise:

    • Study the brain signal – cognition – behaviour relationships in a comprehensive way.
    • Study the intrinsic dynamic patterns and relationships in the complex neural dynamic signals.
    • Neural correlates and mechanisms underlying cognitive abilities.
    • Brain signal-informed cognitive evaluation and training.
    • Brain-computer interface.

The research tools that are primarily used in CNSD lab:

    • EEG (electroencephalography)
    • Basic cognitive task design; passive, interactive, adaptive, and naturalistic tasks
    • AI (applying deep-learning networks to learn the neural time series/dynamics for information extraction and making predictions).
    • Advanced and composite neural signal processing methods.
